Dear All,
I recently had the fun task of cleaning out my parents old house (with their knowlege), and found a heap of super 8 films my dad recorded back in the '70s. I don't have a super 8 player and would love to know where I could get my hands on one.... I live in Sydney....

John,
The 'player' you will need is a super8 projector, and a suitable screen surface to show them on.Suggest you scan other websites to obtain items economically. There are hundreds of them out there! Best Of Luck.

I hereby request that someone who lives in the vicinity of John Leavey help this chap, person, individual, to a wildly good time by helping them through the process.
The goal, a wonderous night reviewing memories at home with the folks and friends with nary a fear that the film has been recorded over with an 80's sitcom TV show because it was shot on film rather than video!

Well, I think I've figured out my "catch phrase"...
"What happened!", since your last post?

Alex, sorry for not getting back to you, but in the meantime have become a dad & just bought a house, so have not had much free time, though now I'll be looking to save money... so a night in watching super 8 will be as exciting as it will get for some time to come........

Congratulations John!
When you finally have some spare time and and don't crave the sleep - try St Vinnies, the Salvo's, Lifeline, 2nd hand stores, garage sales - there are all sorts of places where you can get cheap projectors. Make sure all the parts the film will come in contact with are clean, including in the gate - if the projector hasn't been used for a while you don't want to run the risk of scratches. Also make sure you know how to turn the projecor off in a hurry in case it jams and melts the film (it can happen!)You can get by with out a slide screen - a white wall or piece of cardboard will suffice - have fun!

- you can also try eBay for projectors -- and always remember the value of the film - apart from the irreplaceable personal value - it could have wider social/community value and places like ScreenSound Australia might be interested in copying it or preserving it.

Lets get the verbiage correct. Film is technically recorded I guess but us old pros call it "shot" and it is played back but the process is projected not "played". Keep in mind that these are video terms compared to film language. Go to eBay and you can always find dozens of Super 8 projectors. BE CAREFUL though and read the ads with the utmost care so you will not get burned! hope this helps.
